The Cave

Once, there were 4 children: Jereme, Rebekah, Crystal, and Rachel.  They lived in the country with endless dirt piles.  Dirt in the field, dirt in the garden, dirt by the wood pile. They would dig in the dirt, pile the dirt, make things out of the dirt. They loved to play in the dirt.

Playing in the dirt.
Trouble in the dirt!

So one day they got shovels and buckets and went to digging.  They dug and dug.  And dug some more.  What to do with this wonderful big hole!  “A cave”, one mentioned. Smiles brightened all their faces.  Their digging project was just behind their dad’s wood pile where their dad had also, conveniently, stored old discarded boards. Merrily they carried the boards to their hole and placed them on top. Perfect fit.  With a crawl hole left open they excitedly tried out their newest ‘fort’, one of many forts. It was awesome, the best they had made!

The dirt Cave
The grand dirt cave.

The making of this cave-fort was what mattered, so, as usual, when it was done the kids quickly forgot it and did something else.  They also forgot that their dad told them to fill it in because it would be a hazard when the old boards rotted.

A couple years passed.  Leaves and dirt covered the boards and the hole.  It was all a memory.  And, yes, the boards did rot!

The house shook at the sound of their dad’s “Aaargh!”  He had fallen into the hole!  He had work for those kids that day!
