It was somewhere in the remote lava lands of Idaho, Sawtooth Mountain country. Crystal wanted to see the Shoshone Ice Caves. Her dad thought, whatever. He drove many miles off the beaten path to get her there.
The caves turned out to be cold storage for the Shoshone Indians who once roamed the desolate lands. Being peace loving, they chose the location so neighboring tribes would not covet their land and war against them. A successful move as no one else wanted this desolate area.
All the educational stuff aside, Crystal and her two sisters edged into the hole-like cave. It must have been 50 below! Rachel said her knees were freezing off! They crossed a frozen stream that had coins frozen in different layers. Crystal was so enthralled that she wanted to be part of it, so she worked up an impressive spittle and deposited it there on the frozen pool inside the cave. Luckily, the tour guide did not see it, but to this day a piece of Crystal abides in that cave!
