The King

It was a long drive to somewhere. Mom packed the lunch as usual, which was not always to everyone’s joy. Snacks and lunch alike consisted of hunks of cheese, an equal sized chunk of bread and carrot sticks… always carrot sticks. At the start of the trip the kids were content with the menu (they were hungry), but dad rebelled.

At one point he could no longer take everyone contentedly munching on carrot sticks and left everyone in the car while he went in to a burger joint. When he got in the car and started pulling everything out of his bag, everyone saw that he had purchased two burgers. With all eyes on that second burger, dad promptly handed it to Chow who from that moment on became dad’s best friend.

As the trip wore on though there was more rebellion in the car as Rachel’s mom once again pulled out the lunch menu: Carrots with accessories. Rachel looked at her dad and protested, “No way! I can’t take any more carrots!” Her dad sagely nodded in absolute agreement.

The first exit led them to high class eateries. To dad’s silent disappointment, Rachel’s number one choice was The King ! a dubious choice as one never knows what one will get (Burger King for you lowlanders).

Little did Rachel know that the workers could not speak English.

Somehow she was able to order what she wanted, a fine burger, but her dad came away with microwaved lettuce in a bun! He was ticked at Rachel and proclaimed: Never eat in a place where no one speaka de Englay!
